PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Meat meals and meat and bone meals are major by-products of the slaughtering industry and are important components of stock feeds for pigs and poultry in Australia. For simplicity, these products are hereinafter referred to as meat meals.
The most common form is batch dry rendering, in which an offal charge of about 3 tonnes is indirectly heated by steam at a pressure of about 500 kPa in a jacketed cylindrical cooker. Water is progressively evaporated until only dry tallow and solids of very low (around 8%) moisture content remain. Continuous cookers have replaced or supplemented batch cookers in many abattoirs. The major problem with using meat meals in stock feed is their variability in nutrient composition and this depends to a large extent on the type of livestock being slaughtered and the policy an abattoir has with regard to the type of offals that are included in the final meal. Some abattoirs include blood after the rendering process, others exclude blood.
The protein, fat and mineral levels of meat meal can vary depending on the source (abbatoir). Confirm the fat and protein levels with the supplier at purchasing.
DIRECTIONS FOR USE
• Meat meals can be included in the diets for pigs and poultry of all ages. However, since these by-products are so variable, it is not good practice to use them as the sole source of supplementary protein in the diet. Generally, the calcium and phosphorus contents prohibit the use of excessive amounts of these by-products in pig and poultry diets.
• The use of meat meal in diets for pigs may be limited due to low lysine availability caused by poor processing conditions. It is important that each source of meat meal be assessed on its own merits to determine the nutrient profile and inclusion rates.
